Nothaftgewölbe | Opening Hours & Events

In the Nothaftgewölbe in Hengersberg, historical architecture meets lived hospitality. The lovingly renovated barrel vault with its characteristic Romanesque columns provides the setting for restaurant evenings, private celebrations, and atmospheric events. The operation is deliberately focused: On restaurant days, the house opens in the evening, while cultural and culinary evenings take place on selected dates. Thanks to clear directions, the approach is uncomplicated, and parking is located directly behind the courtyard. Those visiting for the first time quickly notice the combination of a cozy vaulted room, an adjacent dance hall with a stage, a winter garden to the inner courtyard, a large bar, and the Mediterranean vaulted garden. For small gatherings, the intimate Bauernstüberl is also available. This makes the location suitable for both a relaxed dinner and celebrations from birthday parties to weddings. This overview consolidates the most important information regarding opening hours, programs, food, capacities, and directions, providing practical tips for planning your visit.

Opening Hours, Reservations, and Practical Information

The Nothaftgewölbe consciously focuses on concentrated service times. According to official communication, the restaurant is currently open on Thursdays and Fridays in the evening, usually from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM. These times serve as a reliable basis for restaurant operations, and special events may have different entry and end times. To be sure, it is advisable to make a reservation: The team can be reached by phone at the Hengersberg landline number, and in summer 2025, an easy reservation via WhatsApp was introduced. This is especially convenient when on the go or when trying to coordinate a suitable time with a group. For viewing the rooms prior to a celebration, such as a wedding, the house offers the opportunity on Thursday and Friday afternoons to take a relaxed look at the halls and subsequently get to know the kitchen. This combination of a short tour and culinary introduction helps in planning the menu, schedule, and room layout. Those traveling with allergies or special dietary requests should ideally mention this during the reservation. The team plans menus proactively and considers vegetarian and vegan options as well as intolerances. For family celebrations, it is explicitly allowed to bring your own cakes or pastries. A practical tip for restaurant evenings: Particularly popular dates in the vault season are quickly booked out. Groups should therefore reserve early and briefly confirm their arrival time so that service and kitchen can optimally coordinate the process.

Events and Program: from Crime Dinner to Dinner Show

The Nothaftgewölbe is not only a restaurant but also a stage for entertaining evenings. A recurring highlight is the crime formats surrounding the original Wirtshauskrimi. What guests can expect there is explicitly not a classic crime dinner in the serious sense, but Bavarian slapstick, a storm of humor, and excitement at the regulars' table. The productions focus on training the laughing muscles and involve the audience in a cheerful investigative world, where it is more about murder fun than dark crime scene atmosphere. In Hengersberg, this show is presented as a full evening experience, usually in combination with a multi-course menu. The event descriptions emphasize that a new case is played each year, allowing regular guests to look forward to fresh punchlines. Typically, there is an early entry in the late afternoon or early evening to allow for arrival, seating, and enjoying the first drink before the show starts. Particularly popular dates are announced through regional event portals and fill up quickly. Therefore, early ticket booking is recommended. At the same time, the program remains varied: In addition to crime formats, the atmosphere of the vault allows for small-scale concerts, cultural evenings, culinary theme nights, and private anniversaries with stage moments. Due to the flexible room separation between the vault and dance hall, the seating can be precisely adjusted to the program, allowing for intimate readings as well as lively celebration evenings with dancing. Those planning an event should indicate whether stage, sound, and lighting are needed in their inquiry. The house understands the interplay of service, kitchen, and event management and can recommend suitable schedules to ensure that menu courses and program points flow seamlessly together.

Menu, Kitchen, and Popular Classics

The kitchen in the Nothaftgewölbe combines regional flair with Mediterranean accents. Known are the stone oven pizzas, baked in an original Italian oven, focusing on a thin, crispy texture. Popular classics listed on publicly accessible food portals include the Pizza Prosciutto and Quattro Stagioni with ham, mushrooms, olives, and peppers. In addition to pizzas, homemade burger variants are offered, including a signature burger with beef patty, bacon, mozzarella, tomatoes, avocado, and homemade sauce, served with a colorful salad, fries, and dip. Such entries on the portals carry a note that the menu displayed in the restaurant is always binding; this is common practice, as seasonal products, availability, and special dishes can lead to adjustments. For guests with intolerances or special requests, the team asks for a brief note at the time of reservation so that the kitchen can prepare alternatives. In reviews, guests praise the attentiveness of the service and emphasize that suitable dishes can also be found for children or people with allergies. Those who want to indulge in culinary delights should plan a restaurant evening alongside a tour: first, view the rooms, then take a seat in the vault or winter garden and explore the menu. For event evenings, it is advisable to arrange the menu in advance. This way, courses can be coordinated with the schedule, from a quickly served starter before the first program point to dessert during the break. For family celebrations, self-brought cakes are welcome; the team integrates them into the process and takes care of plates, cutlery, and serving. A small tip for pizza lovers: A vault requires time. If you want to enjoy the crust crispy and the topping juicy, order at a relaxed pace and combine it with an appetizer, rather than bringing everything at once. This increases the enjoyment factor and keeps the evening relaxed.

Weddings, Celebrations, and Capacities: Smartly Combine Rooms

The location is equipped for celebrations of any size. The vaulted room was extensively renovated in 2019 and offers up to about 130 seats with its four Romanesque columns. Adjacent is a separable dance hall with a stage, ideal for speeches, live music, and DJ sets. A winter garden opens to the inner courtyard, a large bar complements the vaulted area, and on the west side, the Mediterranean vaulted garden invites as an atmospheric outdoor area. These zones can be combined or used separately. In total, celebrations can be staged for around 30 to 200 guests without the space feeling too cramped or lost. For intimate occasions, the Bauernstüberl is also available, a closed room for up to approximately 10 people. For weddings, the menu planning is coordinated in detail with the couple. The kitchen offers regional classics as well as vegetarian and vegan dishes and considers intolerances upon request. Those wishing to maintain family traditions can bring cakes or pastries; the house naturally allows this. For Fridays in the wedding season, the vault is the preferred location, while the restaurant operation is flexibly adjusted. In the initial conversation, it is advisable to describe the desired character of the celebration: rather upscale and quiet, festive and classic, or lively with a long dance part. This will determine the seating arrangement, the pathways between the bar, stage, and outdoor area, as well as the timing of the menu. Thanks to the existing stage, the rooms are also suitable for company anniversaries, award ceremonies, and Christmas parties. Those planning presentations should inquire early about technical support and seating options. The team is experienced and can indicate how many standing tables fit in the reception, how many seats in the main hall, and how much space is available in the dance area to ensure a fluid event.

Directions and Parking: Quickly Accessible, Directly at the Courtyard

The approach is also uncomplicated for outsiders. From the highway, take the Hengersberg exit onto the B533 towards Grafenau. At the next exit, leave the federal road towards Schwarzach. The Nothaftgewölbe is located opposite the Schwarzach church, making orientation on-site very easy. Those arriving by car should follow the signs to the parking spaces behind the courtyard. This keeps the paths short, and guests enter the location directly from the courtyard area. For organizers, this location is practical: Deliveries for decoration, technology, or cakes can be organized through the courtyard. For celebrations with many outsiders, it is worthwhile to sketch the route in the invitation with a few words and include a note about the courtyard parking. Those arriving by public transport should plan a short walk depending on the connection. In practice, it has proven effective to clearly define meeting points, such as the entrance at the vaulted garden or the main entrance to the vault. For winter events, the courtyard situation is pleasant, as you arrive weather-protected and can use the winter garden as a transition zone. And if you are combining a cultural evening with a prior meal, a time buffer of 15 to 20 minutes for parking, arriving, and coat check is recommended to ensure a relaxed experience for the show start or greeting.

Photos, Seating Plan, and the Best Seats: Think Flexibly in the Vault

There is no fixed seating plan in the Nothaftgewölbe, as the rooms are flexibly arranged depending on the occasion, number of guests, and program. This is an advantage: Whether tables for an elegant dinner, round tables for communicative celebrations, or row seating for a performance – the crew arranges the layout so that pathways, sightlines, and service work smoothly. In the vaulted room, four Romanesque columns divide the space and give the hall its special structure. This creates atmospheric axes that can be emphasized with candlelight and indirect lighting. For stage evenings, the stage and dance floor are positioned according to the ensemble and technology so that sightlines harmonize. In programs that rely heavily on interaction, seats closer to the stage on the sides are often particularly lively, while central seats offer a bit more overview. Those who appreciate tranquility during celebrations feel comfortable near the winter garden, where the transition to the inner courtyard brings additional air and light. For couples at weddings: A trial seating during the tour helps to define favorite spots and possibly set a children's table so that short paths to the bar or outdoor area are created. Since no rigid seating scheme is predetermined, seating plans should ideally be finalized together with the team. This way, technical or presentation area requirements can also be taken into account. For guest photos, the vaulted garden on the west side and the inner courtyard are popular spots, as they capture the warm masonry and historical lines of the property. In the Bauernstüberl, intimate motifs with lots of wood and closeness are created, ideal for small anniversaries or candlelight moments.

It's hard to believe, we (my family and I) are at the Ponyhof in Hengersberg for the 5th time and only discovered this great restaurant this year. We made a last-minute reservation (I think you can't do without it) and were there for dinner. The menu has a very nice selection, with something for everyone! Even for our little daughter, who has various food allergies, the menu offered quite a bit of choice. We were greeted warmly and served quickly. The service was very attentive! We wanted to reserve again for the next day right away... unfortunately, that didn't work out (murder mystery dinner fully booked). We will definitely come back next year... one more thing, the ambiance is truly exceptional!

We celebrated our wedding in the banquet hall of the Nothaft vault, with about 115 guests. Overall, the location was perfect and exactly as we envisioned. The food, the service, and the organization on the wedding day were very good and were highlighted by the guests as very successful, in addition to the spatial conditions. Specifically, we found the preparation and the tips and experiences to be very helpful in our wedding planning. Overall, the communication was great and the prices were very fair, transparent, and without any nasty surprises afterwards. We would choose the location again anytime and definitely recommend it. We would love to be guests at a wedding there ourselves 😉 Thank you again for everything! Kathi & Christoph.

I would like to sincerely thank the whole team for the wonderfully executed wedding of my daughter. Great service, friendly team, very good food, and a very nice location, both indoors and outdoors. Not to forget, there are plenty of parking spaces available, and the kids have a lot of space and are safe in the completely enclosed Nothaft building.
